UNION OR BUST? THE ONGOING DEBATE FOR ESPORTS UNIONS | ESPORTS INSIDER |
Women’s esports has long been a contentious topic in competitive gaming. Opinions vary wildly on why esports struggles to live up to the equalising potential it is arguably uniquely positioned — compared to traditional sports — to deliver. For each step forward, it seems, there’s at least one step back. Where are these challenges born, and how can the industry help flesh out the women’s esports scene?

Conversations around player unions frequently arise among esports professionals, especially following controversies or draining tournament schedules.
Most recently, professional Apex Legends players questioned whether the conversation should restart again following a series of late payments after the Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS) 2022 Championship in Raleigh. |

As the UK esports scene has grown, so too has the number of teams from amateur, to semi-pro to those battling it out on stages in front of audiences worldwide.
These teams compete in a diverse range of esports scenes, including League of Legends, CS:GO, Apex Legends, Overwatch, Fortnite, Halo, VALORANT, Rainbow Six, Rocket League, FIFA and more. |
The UK’s esports scene has grown, and bricks and mortar venues are an integral part of this development.
Gfinity opened a London esports arena in 2015, which hosted over 150 professional gaming events and studio productions before closing its doors in February 2023. However, if true, they point to a continuation or worsening of the toxicity known to already exist within esports. When compared to the reaction of Carlos, who felt “terrible about the discussions” created from his actions, a worrying picture emerges. As a writer, my specialism is in B2B editorial and article work. Approaching business relations with an analytical perspective, each piece of written content is written to support and further business motivations, while remaining within distinct company branding and guidelines.
While working for a UK-based PR company, I was able to gain a strong understanding of the B2B writing process, particularly within the Technology Industry. Writing for clients spanning areas such as AI, IoT, and Apps, it was a necessity to quickly adapt to new information and knowledge. Resultingly, I developed the ability to conduct research rapidly, effectively, and accurately, in order to meet client needs. Working from written briefs, I often took the 1-4 sources provided and expanded to gain the most in-depth perspective before beginning the task. |
